Questions to ask while visiting seniors living

Are you getting ready to visit a senior living? Don’t forget to ask these essential questions to ensure you choose the right living environment. By comparing different senior living, you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision.

1. What Are the Different Types of Rooms and What Do They Look Like?

Before you sign a lease, make sure you have seen the available unit types. According to your needs, you will be able to see if the accommodation contains a kitchenette, an adapted bathtub and/or a shower, a balcony, a bathroom, etc. When comparing unit prices, you may be able to choose a smaller unit, such as a studio or one-bedroom apartment because you will have 3 meals included, housekeeping and cable. It all depends on what you are looking for!

2. What is included in the rent price?

To make your choice, do not hesitate to inform yourself on inclusions and exclusions. Make a list of what you need and note whether it is included or not. Here are some examples of services to check:

  • Meals
  • TV Cable
  • Telephone
  • Internet
  • Electricity
  • Heating
  • Furniture and appliances
  • Housekeeping
  • Laundry and linen services

If you need health care, also verify the following:

  • Medication management
  • Bathing assistance
  • Convalescent care
  • Help with dressing
  • Incontinence care
  • Mobility assistance

Tip: Carefully review Schedule 6 of the Lease

Schedule 6 is a mandatory document attached to any lease in a private senior living. It clearly and thoroughly outlines all the services included in the rent and those offered à la carte. Be sure to read it carefully before signing.

3. What activities are offered at the senior living? Is there an activity coordinator?

You will spend a lot of time in your new environment, so it is better to choose a place that will offer you a range of activities to fully enjoy retirement. Some senior living will even have an on-site facilitator to offer a host of activities for all tastes, at any time of the day: aqua fit, choir, outdoor outings, craft classes, and more.

4. Do you have on-site amenities?

Depending on the size of the senior living, you can benefit from on-site amenities. No more long trips! These may include:

  •  Hair salon
  • Swimming pool
  • Pharmacy
  • Spa
  • Auditorium
  • Restaurant or cafe

5. What safety measures are in place?

Be sure to check the safety measures that ensure residents live in a secure environment and help prevent accidents. Key safety features may include:

  • Fixed or mobile emergency call system (pull cord or emergency bracelet)
  • 24/7 security staff
  • Evacuation plan
  • Sprinkler systems
  • Corded doors
  • Memory care unit
  • Alarm systems
  • Security cameras

6. What are the senior living’s regulations?

Before moving to a senior living, make sure you know the rules that may vary depending on the senior living. For example, can you bring your pet? Is it okay to smoke in your unit ? These clauses must appear on your lease.

7. What is the neighborhood like? Are there stores nearby?

The location of your future senior living plays a key role in your quality of life. You’ll be building new relationships and creating a new routine. Ask yourself:

  • Will I have access to my regular medical care here?
  • Is the area accessible by public transit?
  • Are there walking trails or parks nearby if I want to enjoy nature?
  • Are shops and services within walking distance?

8. Do you have any examples of meals that you serve to residents?

This is an often-overlooked but very important question! After all, this is the food you’ll be eating every day for years. By reviewing a sample meal schedule and menu, you can determine whether it meets your expectations. Senior living can usually adapt meals to meet dietary restrictions or intolerances.

9. Is there storage space available in the senior living?

Do you own a lot of personal belongings? Don’t forget to ask whether the senior living offers additional storage options.

10. Are parking spaces available?

Do you need an indoor or outdoor parking spot for your car? The person conducting the tour will be able to confirm availability and pricing.
