Questions to ask while visiting seniors living

Is it time to visit residences? Do not forget to ask these essential questions to make sure you choose your new environment. You will be able to make an informed choice by comparing the different residences available to you. You can then choose the one that will offer the best value.

1- What are the different types of apartments or rooms ? What do they look like?

Before you sign a lease, make sure you have seen the available unit types. According to your needs, you will be able to see if the accommodation contains a kitchenette, an adapted bath and / or a shower , a balcony, a bathroom, etc. When comparing unit prices, you may be able to choose 2½ instead of 4½ because you will have 3 meals included, housekeeping and cable. It all depends on what you are looking for!

2- What is included in the rent price?

To make your choice, do not hesitate to inform yourself on inclusions and exclusions. Make a list of what you need and note whether it is included or not. Here are some examples of services to check:

  • Meal
  • Cable
  • Telephony
  • Internet
  • Electricity
  • Heater
  • Furniture / appliances
  • Housekeeping
  • Clothing care / bedding

Do not forget health care, if you need it:

  • Management of the medication
  • Help with bath
  • Convalescent care
  • Aid to clothing
  • Help for incontinence
  • Travel assistance

3- What hobbies are planned at the residence? Is there a facilitator?

You will spend a lot of time in your new environment, so it is better to choose a place that will offer you a range of activities to fully enjoy retirement. Some residences will even have an on-site facilitator to offer a host of activities for all tastes, at any time of the day: aqua fit, choir, outdoor outings, craft classes, and more.

4 - Do you have on-site amenities?

Depending on the size of the residence, you can benefit from on-site amenities. Finished the long trips! You could find:

  • Hairdresser
  • Swimming pool
  • Pharmaceutical counter
  • Spa
  • Auditorium
  • Restaurant or cafe

What are the security features ?

Check the security features that have been put in place to ensure that residents live in a safe environment and avoid accidents. For this purpose, here is a brief list of the main safety features:

  • Fixed or mobile help call system (zipper or emergency strap)
  • Supervisor 24 hours a day
  • Evacuation plan
  • Sprinklers
  • Coded doors
  • Prosthetic unit
  • Alarm system
  • Surveillance camera system

What are the residences regulations?

Before moving to a residence, make sure you know the rules that may vary depending on the residence. For example, can you bring your pet? Is it ok to smoke in your unit ? These clauses must appear on your lease.

How is the neighborhood? Are there businesses nearby?

The location of your future home has a big impact on your decision. You will live there for a long time and it is also where you will make new connections, contributing to your quality of life. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Will my medical follow-ups be available at this location?
  • Is the place accessible by public transit?
  • If I am in love with nature, are there walking trails or parks nearby?
  • Are there shops nearby?

Do you have any examples of meals that you serve to residents?

This is a question, which we do not always think of asking, but oh how important! This is the food you will eat every day for many years. By having a preview of what can be served and the schedule, you will be able to check if it corresponds to your expectations.

Is there a storage space in the residence?

Do you have several personal effects to put away? Do not forget to ask if the residence can offer you a storage space.

Are there parking spaces?

Looking for indoor or outdoor parking for your car? The person in charge of the visit will be able to answer you if it is possible and to indicate you the price.
