Maison des aînés et alternative de Val-d'Or

The Maison des aînés et alternative de Val-d’Or is a public long-term care home run by the CISSS de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue. It welcomed its first residents in November 2024. It offers 48 places spread across four households of 12 people. Twelve places are for seniors with loss of autonomy, and 36 places are for adults with a physical or intellectual disability. This human-scale model replaces the traditional institutional approach with a true living environment.

Each resident has a private room with an adapted toilet and shower. Care is person-centred: living spaces recreate the warm feel of a home and encourage a more active lifestyle. Indoor and outdoor spaces are designed to foster human contact and openness to the community. Family caregivers are welcome to take part in residents’ daily lives, which helps maintain strong family ties.

The home is located on the grounds of Val-d’Or Hospital, giving direct access to hospital care and specialized health services. This proximity reassures residents and their families, especially when health needs call for quick follow-up. For time outdoors, the Forêt récréative de Val-d’Or offers wooded trails ideal for walks. The home is one of 46 seniors’ homes and alternative homes being rolled out across Québec.
