Desperate situations call for drastic remedies: an unprecedented mass vaccination campaign is currently underway in the province to inoculate vaccines against COVID-19 to all the citizens. In private seniors' residences, the operation for administering to residents and healthcare teams the first dose of a vaccine against COVID-19 is underway, or even completed in some regions.

To date, three-quarters of residents have received the first dose on site. In these establishments, real-life can therefore begin to pick up little by little.

Why is it so important to get the COVID-19 vaccine?

The vaccine against COVID-19, regardless of the manufacturer or the technique used, is the one and only way to protect oneself against this disease. Indeed, it is used to prevent unwanted symptoms or severe illnesses associated with this virus. It is not a cure for COVID-19.

Thus, the main objective behind the current mass vaccination campaign is to reduce hospitalizations and deaths linked to COVID-19 among people most at risk, a group including seniors over 70 years old. Currently, the vaccines offered are more than 80% effective. Efficacy tends to increase for vaccines that require two doses.

As the elderly are among the groups most at risk of developing and dying of complications from COVID-19, they are given priority immunization.

Now that vaccination is underway throughout the province, what measures should be adopted in residence?

The start of vaccination for more vulnerable clienteles, such as clients of private seniors’ residences, does not, however, mean the immediate end of health measures, on the contrary. As the vaccine takes a few weeks to reach its full effectiveness, frequent hand washing, wearing a face cover or mask and maintaining a distance of two meters between people are still necessary measures.

Even if their residents and their employees now have protection against COVID-19, the residence teams are not lowering their guard, doing everything they can to avoid new outbreaks. They all go to great lengths to prevent a situation that could arise and turn out to be dramatic.

On the other hand, the smooth running of the vaccination campaign in private seniors’ residences allows establishments to foresee, in the very near future, a return to regular social and sports activities. The government has already authorized the reopening of dining rooms in all regions of Quebec. What great news!

Thanks to the vast vaccination operation that has taken place in the RPAs in recent weeks, residents are beginning to resume, to their utmost delight, their favorite activities.
