The Nunavik region, which includes the cities of Kuujjuaq, Mistissini, and Waskaganish, offers a few housing options for seniors. There are three Maisons des aînés in the region: the Maison des aînés de Nunavik, the Maison des aînés de Waskaganish, and the Maison des aînés en Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James. These living environments are designed to accommodate seniors with significant loss of autonomy, in a safe and supervised setting.
For autonomous, semi-autonomous, or seniors with a loss of autonomy, it is possible to consider low-cost private retirement homes in neighboring regions, such as Côte-Nord and Baie-James and Eeyou Istchee. These retirement homes must be certified by the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Quebec, ensuring the quality of care and services provided. Some of these retirement homes also offer specialized services for those living with cognitive losses, such as Alzheimer’s disease, or in need of short-term convalescence following hospitalization. In addition, several CHSLDs are located throughout these territories.
Healthcare in Nunavik is managed by the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services, which includes several CLSCs as well as two main hospitals: the Tulattavik Health Centre in Ungava and the Inuulitsivik Health Centre. These institutions provide access to medical and psychosocial care tailored to the needs of seniors.
Autonomy assessments are carried out by social workers through the Home Support Service (SAD). This process helps guide seniors toward the type of housing that best meets their health needs and level of autonomy.
Several financial support measures are also available, such as the tax credit for home support and the Old Age Security pension payment schedule, to help reduce the costs associated with retirement homes.
