In 2001, Mr. Stéphane Mathieu's wife was diagnosed with cancer, causing great upheaval for this teacher and his family, but also sparking a profound reflection on health, the quality of care, and end-of-life considerations. Looking beyond the cancer, he and his wife decided to make the most of life and to offer the aging population the opportunity to do the same. To achieve this, they acquired their first residence, Le Geai Bleu, in 2003, which they managed until the imminent passing of his wife in 2014. Passionate about his work, he became involved in the fight against breast cancer, but above all, in his new calling: senior residences. The quality of the services he offers, his vision, and the changes he seeks to implement earned him the role of representative for RPA (private seniors’ residences) owners across Montérégie with government bodies.
He excelled in his business model to such an extent that the federal government approached him to design what would later become the Quebec model for the partnership aimed at relieving hospital overcrowding (UHTSL) and providing palliative care. From his collaboration with Annie Larochelle, owner of a senior residence called "Vivre Ans Semble" and a former recreational therapist, the Résidence St-Jean-sur-Richelieu was born in 2007. The residence has 250 units and specialized care floors (IR, Alzheimer’s, UHTSL, and palliative care). It quickly became a model to follow for all senior residences in Quebec.
