The different types of accommodation for seniors

Accommodation types for seniors

When it comes to choosing a residence for a retiree or a senior, it is rather easy to get lost. Indeed, the types of accommodation offered are numerous and each of them has its particularities. Finding the right place for your needs can quickly become a real headache. To help you in your search, Bonjour Résidences has prepared this article. It will undoubtedly allow you to demystify the different types of accommodation for elderly and retired people.

What are the types of accommodation for seniors?

Above all, it is important to know that the degree of independence of the person who will live in the residence will influence your selection. For your convenience, we have categorized accommodation types in gradation; firstly, residential complex for the most autonomous to accommodation for people in need of care and who are less autonomous :

The housing cooperative

The co-op  is a bit like an apartment, but in a community-run environment. In this type of accommodation, the building belongs jointly to all residents and it is the latter who administer it. Thus, each of them participates in the decisions and organizing committees of the cooperative. This is why this accommodation is for seniors or retirees who are autonomous. Also know that in the cooperative, residents are responsible of their own home, which is generally of good quality and at prices below the market.

The housing NPO

The NPO (non-profit organization) is very much like the co-op and is also for autonomous seniors. But in this case, the building is managed by a corporation partly administered by local stakeholders. The latter are generally volunteers and manage the NPO in partnership with the retired people who live in the residence. This organization reduces the workload for residents while providing affordable housing that meets their needs. Although the administration of the building is community-based, this type of accommodation is usually created through government grants and often has a long waiting list.

Private Seniors Residence (RPA)

The private residence is a type of accommodation where apartments and rooms are offered only to the age group of retirees and seniors. It can be a residential complex or a simple building, but in all cases, the management belongs to the owner. Although this accommodation is not subsidized by the government, in Quebec, private residences must have a certificate of conformity issued by the Ministry.

However, when choosing your type of accommodation, pay attention to the different services that are offered in the private residence that interests you. Some institutions offer more or less extensive ranges of services related to domestic life, which can be very useful for a person with a slight loss of autonomy. This may include, for example, hygiene care, distribution of medicines or food aid. Other residences do not offer any services. Thus, this one is more suited to autonomous retirees.

The intermediate resource (IR)

An intermediate resource is halfway between public and private management. It is actually a type of private accommodation, but affiliated to a public institution (usually a health and social services center: CSSS ) through a service contract. Thus, the public institution recruits IR itself, refers them people to be housed and remains responsible for the quality of the care and services that are offered.

An intermediate resource is particularly suitable for seniors and retirees who are experiencing a slight or moderate loss of autonomy. Indeed, this type of accommodation promotes the maintenance of integration in the community while providing a living environment adapted to the needs. IR provides support and assistance services for up to 3 hours a day.

Private CHSLD (unfunded and funded)

A private long-term care center ( CHSLD ) is a type of accommodation reserved for seniors and retirees whose loss of autonomy is significant. These individuals can no longer remain in their home environment because of the increased support they require, for example in cases where constant supervision or nursing care is required. People with Alzheimer's disease is a very good example.

In the case of a private funded CHSLD, the institution is fully subsidized by the government, even if the administration of the building is conducted by a private owner. However, the resident's financial contribution is established by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). To obtain a place, an application must be placed in the CSSS of your region .

In a private unfunded CHSLD, however, there is no government subsidy and prices are set by the owners of the place. Generally, the monthly rent varies according to the needs and services that are needed. For a senior to be admitted, you can make a request for accommodation , our service will put you in touch with the responsible persons. In all cases, whether the accommodation is funded or not, the establishment must hold a permit issued by the ministry .

The public CHSLD

The public CHSLD and the private residential CHSLD are two types of accommodation that are very similar. In both cases, the institution is fully subsidized by the government and the financial contribution of the resident is established by the RAMQ. In the case of a public CHSLD, however, the building is owned and managed by the State.

Once again, seniors admitted to a public CHSLD are in great loss of autonomy and require special care. An application must be sent to the CSSS in your area to obtain a place.
